The Ancient Middle East

The Ancient Middle East is the beginning of urbanization in the West. We know a lot about their mythology because they left us libraries in their great cities. Ur, Babylon, Jerusalem – without them, we would have been ignorant of much of the development of their religions. Their deities were almost entirely nature representations and later were perceived as what we call today Nature Spirits.

The gods of this area were strongly connected. The Sumerian gods, for instance, were assimilated into Assyria and Babylon, and it is almost impossible to separate them. Since I am not emphasizing the sequence of the usual mythology in this book, I will not attempt to categorize them according to their origin.
