River Women and River Men (Northern Europe)

These river entities live in or near bodies of water, including waterfalls, streams, bridges, river banks, or underwater crystal palaces. Sometimes, they prefer living under tree roots. The males and the females have different duties and lifestyles. River Women like to sit on lily pads, combing their hair, singing, and shape-shifting. Their moods swing dangerously from kindness in summer and winter to cruelty in spring and fall. The males guard the routes to Elfland at areas involving bodies of water and play on golden harps and violins. The River Men are moody and changeable, but unlike the females, they are not cruel.
