The days leading up to Halloween passed rapidly, though there were moments that dragged by at half the normal speed. Titus shut down after he found out he had been wrong about the summoner.

He didn't talk much at school, not that he had before, but now he barely spoke. He wasn’t talking to Tess much, and he wasn’t even snapping at Shade like he had before, even when Shade was being more annoying than usual.

He didn't have a comeback when Logan swept the tip of his crutch out from under him, sending him sprawling. Tess expected Titus to retaliate, or at least have a snarky retort, but he had just gathered his things and walked off. Even Jeremy thought it was strange. He didn't say it, but Tess could feel his displeasure at Titus’s lack of response.
