Adcock said carefully. Her reserve broke. “How did this happen Tess? The FBI just left. They said someone was trying to hurt her. Why would they do that? What has been going on?”

Tess hated lying, but that was all she seemed be doing these days. There’s nothing saying I have to lie, she reminded herself. I just can’t tell them the truth. 

There had to be a happy medium, something she could say that they would understand. She had to make them understand. They had the right to know.
