Tess was numb. Her mouth wouldn't move, and she couldn't do anything but look at the book on the bed.

She was suddenly back in the ER at Arkham General Hospital, and a doctor was telling her and her mother that her father had died. The doctor kept saying, “I'm sorry, Tess,” but his voice wasn't that of the physician. It was the voice of the boy. The boy who had told her he could fix this. She just stared at Titus.

“How will I explain this to Mom?” Her chest felt like it was turning inward on itself. She found it hard to breathe. “Hey, Mom, I see things that aren't there? I'm crazy!”
