Tom gazed out the window slit of his jail cell. The parking lot was empty with a few sea gulls loitered about as dusk crept in. Michigan was beautiful during the spring and Tom realized he had not noticed the snow had melted and the trees were budded green. For the first time, he was really looking at was around him and he laughed to himself. There was a time when he looked forward to the changing of the seasons. Like chapters in a book, they brought new beginnings and expectations, but now they came and went, reminders that life changed whether he liked it or not.

 

He heard the click-clack of the cell door as it unlocked and it whined when it opened. Tom turned and saw a buzz cut officer holding a clipboard.

 

“You made bail. Let’s go.”
