The history talk was going well until Gerry Daly, our local history nut and Pedant in Chief raised his hand to direct a question at the hapless author.

“This is less of a question, more of an observation,” he began.

The author’s face paled and his mouth tightened.

Gerry explained, counting on his fingers, that his observation consisted of four parts and proceeded to explain in all four parts, at length, how the author was wrong in his ideas on the purposes of several stone age sites he had explored and documented in his book.

Some of the audience knew Gerry and began to fiddle with their belongings and look with longing at the exit. Others straightened up in their seats, knowing a fight was on the horizon. I have learned history buffs love a good fight. If you go...
