Marie sat at her vanity in dressing room number two of the Hammerstein Olympia Theater adding the final touches to her make-up. The weekend shows had their own make-up department and they did a fine job on the performers. Marie was not a part of the weekend shows. It was not a great living, but it was a living nonetheless. Someday, it would all be easier, she thought.

Marie was the next act up, but rather than thinking about her performance, she was thinking about Billy, something that was growing more common. She always thought about Billy, but more so when he was in town.

Someone knocked on the door and she knew who that someone was. Marie checked herself in the mirror then said, “Come in.”

The door opened and Billy walked in. He shut the door behind him and smiled at her.
