The trip to the phantom pyramid, as Gordon began to think of it, took the entire next day and half of the following. It was Professor Kamila who announced definitively that third morning that it was actually, finally, within a half-day’s march.

The adults seemed disappointed by the site when they arrived, considering the effort to get here, but Gordon loved it. The ancient structure rose out of a huge sand drift, its weathered granite still grand after so many millennia.

“It’s wonderful,” said Elie. She was standing with her hands on hips, looking at the pyramid.

“I agree. I was just thinking how solid it still seems, despite being undiscovered for so long.”

“How do you know it’s been undiscovered all that time?” said Saladin.
