The windows surrounding Sybille’s room were her cage.  She told her parents she was sick and would not eat any of the many offerings her mother brought.  She wished she could lock the door, but she didn’t want to make them suspicious.  She couldn’t bear to confess the truth to her parents.  It was awful enough that her sister knew – let alone that she was the cause of Sybille’s distress. 

She considered writing a letter to Theresa, but where to begin?  And what if someone else at the camp found her letter?  It would be far too humiliating.  Her only consolation was her diary, which she locked in a drawer.  She rarely dragged it out.  She told most of her secrets to her friends, but the ones she kept even...
