I don't remember bolting out of the room. Next thing I know, I've careened into a soldier patrolling the hallway. He tumbles and falls on his ass while other guards shout, their words just jumbled noise in my racing thoughts.

Uncle Alex appears in the doorway, full general mode, yelling at his subordinates. They begrudgingly apologize while Teruya yanks the fallen soldier to his feet.

I sit on the floor, shivering like a pathetic little girl. I'm sweating. I can’t catch my breath. That face is burned into my retinas. Dakota's face.
