Chapter Two: Miss Pea is stolen!

At six, when Father came to pick her up, Roberta was sitting with Daimhnait behind the glass counter. Daimhnait had been showing her the functions on an electric sewing machine. She learned how to cut buttonholes and the different stitches one could make with it. Daimhnait had pulled out a store of half-finished purses and samples of things that hadn’t come out the way the customers wanted.

“Does that happen often?”

Roberta fingered the brocade of a brown and sapphire jacket she pulled from the box. She spread it out across her knees, felt the shimmering fabric when she brushed her palm over it.
