Christmas is strange when all your children are teens and the era of total belief and raw excitement fades. My older friends tell me that it all comes around again with a bang when you have grandchildren but I’ll be perfectly happy if both my children refrain from making me a grandmother just yet. I’ve barely mastered the whole parenting thing, I’m not ready for grandparenting.

One grandparent, the Dragon in Law, has been in a depression all month. Every time she rang me she checked, again, that Hannah has stopped writing to Santa.

“Oh the magic of Christmas is gone now,” she intoned in dreary tones more suited to a funeral.

“Christmas isn’t only about Santa....
