Jamie never talked to me about Amy, but he ate the chocolate. After a week he returned Hannah’s soft toy. I took this as a good sign. His normally huge appetite resurged after 48 hours. Even young love can’t obliterate the appetite of a fourteen year old boy.

I distracted him with painting our garden fence and he cheered up when I handed over some cash as a reward. Hannah, of course, protested at missing this earning opportunity but I pointed out that she made a tidy profit from her own items on my market stall each month.
