“Um, Rory, did you hear me?” Mabel asked.

“Yes. Sorry. Just spaced out for a second. Yeah, the letters. They are super interesting.”

“What are they about?”

Rory stared at the light gray leather interior of the family car and thought of Max’s eyes. “Just letters from Jaymi’s great aunt. She was born in 1921. She was from the South Side of Chicago.”

“Oh, notorious! Does she write about any gangsters? Al Capone? Any of those guys?”

“No, not really. She talks about gangsters in passing, like they are just a part of the scenery. Nothing really specific. She never names them even though she worked for a defense attorney.”
