Jamie pushed her food around on her plate, body throbbing in pain, and kept her gaze downward. This was the first time she'd been in her mom's new apartment since her parents had split up. It was bland and sterile, without the lived-in personality of the house Jamie had grown up in.

"Did you want any more greens, Jamie?" her mother asked.

She shook her head and winced in pain from the motion. She'd gotten better at accelerating her healing through commanding the spirits of her blood and flesh to work harder at mending her. And that helped with the minor scratches and bruises. But some of the hits had struck bone deep and would take longer to heal.
