Waves crash against the cliff like they’re trying to knock it down, like it’s a door and they want something behind it. It’s been a long time since I was properly scared and I don’t like it. My hand’s still bandaged and Mum hasn’t been here for too long. Where has she gone? I need her now, more than I ever have.

‘Okay. We’re here. Everybody out.’

The brakes of the ambulance squeak and the two big men with dark clothes who were sitting behind me are out before driver. The lady from the hospital opens an umbrella and runs into headlight glare.

‘Can you walk?’ says a guard, sliding the side door open and letting the wind smack me in the face.

‘Obviously he can walk, Naz. He’s mental, not crippled.’
