Sam didn’t get back home until nearly curfew. Kali was waiting for him the moment he got through the door.

“What happened? Is Mandy OK?”

Sam shrugged. “We got there before she was seriously injured, but she’s shaken. And angry.”

“Well, duh.”

“More at the adults around her who don’t want to do anything about the situation than at Wilson.”

Kali tipped her head to one side. “I could see that. Everybody expects Wilson Cartier to be a jerk, but you imagine that your own parents will have your back.”
