It wasn't all that long

ago when I first noticed it

I was driving to work

on a Tuesday afternoon

and about a quarter of

the way there, I

saw something on the

side of the road

It looked like

roadkill from a distance,

nothing new, it's

pretty common to see

a deer that got

obliterated by a log truck

somewhere along this stretch

of highway

but it seemed too large

to be a deer carcass

the only thing bigger than

deer around these parts are

the elk, and even if a

log truck hits an elk,

there's gonna be debris

and there was none

It was a horse,

a goddamn dead horse

on the side of the road
