‘Well, well. Quod mirum. This is a turn up for the books. What shall I do now?’

Severianus put down the letter.  Germanus was alive after all. It made sense given that his idiot mercenaries had failed to find definitive proof of his rival’s death. There must have been a double; someone made up to look like Germanus.

‘Clever; very clever’.

Severianus laughed; laughed so loudly that his servant came running in to his chamber to see what was wrong.

‘My Lord, what is the matter?’

‘Nothing. Nothing at all. I have just been outwitted by General Germanus, so why should anything be wrong?’

‘But –‘

‘But nothing. Now leave me’, Severianus snapped at the servant.
