“Manay,” cried Diliani. Leaping to her feet, she struck her head against overhanging rock but paid no attention. “We must be off!”

    The confused raven struggled to her feet in the gloom and followed her mistress down the tunnel.

    Moving as quickly as the darkness would allow, Diliani was horrified that someone or something had sniffed her. She glanced back many times, of course to no avail, and didn’t tarry to listen.

    They progressed for a long while, and something happened to her. The lengthy time she had been in the dark, her deep anxiety, and her inability to see came together and forged a yearning for elements that were commonplace, basic, natural—light and color. Her brain was starved for them, and...
