Mr. Salerno was held in federal detention in New York before trial. He was convicted of racketeering. Salerno died in prison of natural causes, just five years into his 100-year sentence in Springfield, Missouri on July 27, 1992, at age

80. Added to his crimes is the destruction of the pre-sumption of innocence in the United States.
