Chapter Sixteen Once a Slave

“There is one thing stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea whose time has come.”

—Victor Hugo

Dred Scott was born in 1797 in Southampton County, Virginia, and became the property of Peter Blow. In 1827, he moved to St. Louis with the Blow family. Following the death of his owner in 1832, he became the property of Blow's daughter Elizabeth. The next year, Elizabeth Blow sold Dred Scott to Dr. John Emerson, an assistant surgeon in the Army, for $500. Scott ran away, but was recaptured.
