Pears are one of the oldest known fruits to exist, evidence of their consumption by humans reaches back to prehistoric times. The oldest known recipe for honeyed pears dates back to around 70 A.D., when a Roman by the name of Pliny the Elder put it in a book called "Pliny's Natural History".

The addition of puff pastry to the dish is a considerably more contemporary addition and one that I absolutely love. You can find it in a few restaurants and bakeries here and there, particularly in the south of France. This dish makes a gorgeous and divinely tasty addition to any holiday table to boot.
