“This is a portable energy source,” he said. “We use them to power computers and comm systems when we’re out on the road.”

Nathaniel held out the small object, and Minta took it.

“It’s heavy,” Minta said.

“It looks solid, but it’s not. It’s almost completely hollow. At the very centre is a miniscule amount of a high-energy substance, like Aether in material form.”

“You think we’re scared of Aether?” Minta asked.

“Ordinarily, perhaps not,” Nathaniel replied.

He took the device back from him. Taking a small pin from the front pocket of his pack, he inserted it delicately into a tiny hole on one corner of the cell.
