and come crashing down on top of him. If he was lucky he would be killed instantly, rather than dying slowly, his body paralyzed and his organs ruptured.

“No hurry, Jethro.”

Jethro paused, searching for the way forwards. He took a step and stumbled, and a tiny avalanche of pebbles ran out from under his foot. Nathaniel’s heart tried to leap from his chest. His hands gripped the reins like an iron vice. Jethro, however, continued on as though nothing had happened.

Finally they reached level ground, a narrow path with a bare wall of rock on one side, and on the other a shallow drop.

Nathaniel sighed in relief, and adjusted his seating. His back ached after the jolting descent.
