Delia and Bernie sat there, mouths open, not quite sure what to say when Alice appeared in the entry way to the living room. “Supper's ready,” she said, waving them to move into the dining room. “C'mon.”

   “Dennis, you sit over here next to me,” Alice said, pointing to a chair.

   “Sure smells good,” Dennis said.

   “I hope you like it,” Alice said. “I learned this recipe in Home Economics class.”

   “Fried chicken is one of my favorites,” Dennis said, as he, Delia, Bernie, Sissy and Alice pulled up their chairs.

   The layout was sumptuous. The table was set with the Sheas’ fine China and silverware. Alice had prepared small bowls...
