Chapter 7

   Alice took the package of chicken that was on the counter and pierced the plastic wrapper with the point of a kitchen knife and tore it away. She put the bird on the cutting board, turning it breast up. First, she cut off the wings and put them in a large bowl. Then she cut off the legs.  Finally, she cut the breasts apart, laying the insides of the bird open and halved it, placing them likewise in a large mixing bowl. Then she turned on the tap and rinsed off the parts. On the counter, she referred to the Betty Crocker Cookbook that was opened to Southern Fried Chicken.

   She took three large eggs and cracked them open over the bowl and poured the whites and yolks...
