“Bye-bye,” Alice said, calling over her shoulder. Then, with a flip of her hair as she turned, she and Dennis were on their way. 

   Dennis opened the passenger door of his Chevy Nomad for Alice. After closing the door, he walked around the back and then slid into the driver’s seat. She looked over the seat at the guitar case in the back.

  “Nice car,” she said.

   “Yeah, I got it at Knapp’s on payments--$45.00 a month. I worked at Produce Row all summer to get the down payment.” 

   “I’ve been over there with Bernie,” Alice said. “He has a grocery store out on the north side--Airline Quik-In,” she said.
