DS Trubshaw looked at her boss. In a few days’ time, she would be gone; their relationship would be over, and that’s the way it had to be.

And that’s the way I want it really. He’s a married man, and I have my future to think about. I enjoyed being a DI for a couple of days, and I know I will enjoy this new job over in Lancashire.

May smiled back.

‘So Butcher murdered them all? We weren’t looking for more than one person after all. It was just one person who could use either hand – to fool us, no doubt!’
