‘We will! Come on Freddie. Have you got your water bottle?’

Donald May looked at his son as he wheeled his bike out of the garage. Freddie had his helmet on wrong again. Why was he so clumsy and unpractical? The Chief Inspector knew why: because he had ASC – Autism Spectrum Condition. It used to be called a ‘disorder’ and then ‘Asperger’s’ before that. And now it was a condition. Freddie wasn’t ill or disabled; just different.

How he and Caz had struggled in the early years before their son had been diagnosed! All the problems at school; the tantrums; the strange habits; the vast vocabulary; the obsessions; the OCD. But now it was under control - mostly.

If only ASC had been ‘disc...
