DA Lancaster paced the cell, hands clasped behind his back as they waited for Javier to return with Beckett. Arrin sat on the floor with his aching back supported by the wall, his broken ankle stretched out in front of him, sprained wrist resting in his lap. Neither of them spoke.

Javier soon returned with the attorney and the crutches. “Here’s the confession,” Beckett said, handing the Slimcom and a stylus to Arrin. “Please don’t delete it this time.”

Arrin read the confession, which mentioned only the crimes he and DA Lancaster had discussed. He willingly signed it and returned it to Mr. Beckett, who looked grateful to receive it back at all.
