Arrin exulted. He hadn’t killed the man! Well, not directly anyway. He was still the catalyst for this officer’s death. He was also still responsible for the deaths of Tracine’s husband and the other officer in the train accident. Still, the resulting lessening of his heavy burden of guilt in the subtraction of a single death made him feel somewhat lightheaded. He leaned against the wall for support and inadvertently made eye contact with Javier.

Never had anyone involved with the law taken his side. He had to know why this young officer had. Perhaps better days were ahead for him and his kind in their interactions with the law.

“Why did you do this for me?”

“I didn’t do it for you. I did it for justice,” Javier said.
