When Peter and Tom headed out to their SUV, Peter saw Tom wearing Arrin’s watch. He nodded at it and asked hopefully, “Does this mean you’ve changed your mind about him and we can go looking for him? He shouldn’t be too hard to find so soon after he left us.”

“You underestimate his ability to disappear,” Tom said. “Anyway, I haven’t changed my mind about him. I accepted the watch because it’s outrageously expensive, and he owes me at least this trinket in exchange for all the trouble he put me through.” He took his place behind the wheel of the SUV and slammed his door.

Peter took one last, longing look down the street hoping for a miracle. Arrin didn’t show, though. He sighed and joined Tom in the SUV.
