“You should be careful not to come too close to the force, field unless you wish to fry,” Cody said. “Allow me to demonstrate.”

He pulled a small green apple from his pocket, and tossed it at the force field. A bright flash and a loud sizzle later the smell of burnt apple assaulted Arrin’s nostrils and what used to be an apple, but which now looked more like a lump of smoking coal, fell to the floor with a thunk.

Cody grinned. “Cool, huh?”

Arrin didn’t see anything about “cool” about the demonstration. “No doubt you’d derive great pleasure from seeing me burned to a crisp like the apple,” he said before retreating to the lumpy cot on the slab and covering his face with his arm until he heard Cody and Logan leave....
