Arrin reluctantly accompanied Peter outside, where Peter took a seat in one of the two porch chairs and motioned for Arrin to sit in the other. He complied, but uneasily. He wasn’t looking forward to this talk. Peter would want details about last night, and he still hadn’t been able to concoct a feasible story.

“So,” Peter said. “Let’s begin with Chloe. How are you doing?”

“I’m fine. She was merely a diversion. Now she’s gone.”

Peter was taken aback. For months Arrin had yearned for Chloe, and only yesterday he was outraged she’d left him without saying goodbye. Now, overnight, he was done with her? He had to be covering up his true feelings, but Peter knew if he pushed the matter, it would make Arrin angry, so he let it drop...
