What Happens When You Interview Your Characters?

Why would I want to interview my characters? I invented them. Surely I should know who they are and what they’re thinking. Yes, but without getting too mystical, some of that knowledge is still in the subconscious and I need a path to it. Interviewing characters has been a useful tool in creating that path.
