“Marcy, please…” Alan said, holding my hand tighter, “please don’t talk like this.”

“Tell him that I’m going to win,” I said, “he wants me to break, but I won’t. I have a purpose now. I’m ready to take whatever he has to throw at me. I’ll be the one laughing in the end, because I’ll still be alive when people stop believing he exists and trade him in for different gods. It’s always been that way. I’ll outlive him, and he’ll be nothing but a footnote in history, something future generations will laugh at, wondering how people like you could have believed such foolishness.”
