The day couldn’t go by fast enough. All morning the only thing I could see was the image of Mike’s message, recalled with my eidetic memory. The students became invisible. Mike, of course, didn’t show up. I wondered if he’d ever show up again. If he brought the hammer down on his plan and anyone else found out about it, he’d be as sure as dead.

The students noticed that I was distracted. Several times I just trailed off in mid-sentence and lost my place in the lesso...
