Randy smirk at that. “I think I can help Mike.”

Alan had a small grin as he chewed his food. He swallowed and said, “Just like you did with Isabella?”

“That was different,” I replied.

“Hey, I’m not knockin’ it,” Alan said, “I think it’s great you’re taking an interest. I just think you’re causing yourself undue stress by taking on the worst students.”

“Who’s Isabella?” Randy asked.

“Isabella Perez,” Alan explained, “Marcy’s protégé last year. She was another troubled student.”

“Some kind of noodle incident there?” Randy asked.

Alan didn’t say anything, just glanced at me then back to Randy before taking another bite.
