The hawks circled
the multitude
of mice and shrews
across the windswept savannah -

a battle, of speed 
and wit and will
played out perpetually
day and night - 

overground, the 
keen-eyed hawks
held the upper hand,

but could not 
fully reckon with
the many tunnels
and hiding-holes
beneath the surface.
