I leave my father alone with Benjamin. I don’t want to influence his decision – I probably already implanted in him a good amount of doubt - and of the two, he’s the one with the keenest eye. He’s one of the best lawyers in the entire Massachusetts for good reasons, even if after mom’s death he mostly did pro-bono work. I grew up in the hallways of the courthouse, my first steps were probably taken to mimic him, my first words an incomprehensible closing argument. I gave mom hell, acting boldly like a prosecutor even when my eyes gave away my guilt.

A decided knock on the steel door behind me makes me turn my head to see the guard unlock it with a loud clack. Dad comes out, smiling at the guard, while his eyes are already beckoning me to follow him. I quickly scrutinize...
