never did. The two of them seemed to silently agree that that was the last time they would speak about her past. Maria didn’t push. Not only for her mother’s sake – it was too much for her sometimes. As she rode back home on the train that night, she looked for the old man – on every platform, in every train car, on the face of every man with an old hat and coat. Even for months thereafter on the streets near her job, she searched for him. But he was nowhere to be found. It hurt her to know that all the times she had passed the old man on the street, ignored him, she was ignoring her own father. If she could only see him again, hug him once. Oh, how she wanted to hug him.

Maria never saw the old man again.
