As soon as they entered the gates, they were blocked by the city guard. A barricade of bodies stood between them and the resplendent city beyond. Thayne was forced to rein their horses sharply to avoid a collision. Tania caught her chest against the saddle’s pommel and winced as she straightened. This prisoner business was getting old.  

“H-Halt,” a man dressed in the captain’s armor called nervously.

Tania studied Thayne as he faced the guards. His expression was blank save for a small smile pulling up the corners of his mouth. When she turned her gaze on the guards again, she had to fight her own amusement. The captain was sweating profusely, his tidy red mustache glistening in the morning light.
