When the SUV I’m riding in finally pulls to a stop, my legs are numb from sitting and the cuffs have left deep divots in my wrists. We’re in front of a huge, menacing building.

My captors are already out of the vehicle. They left me behind as they walk towards white marble steps that get narrower as they go up. Above their heads, carved into the old stone above the columned entry, are letters proclaiming this to be the Justice Building of the Republic of Texas.

There’s a statue of a lady in front of the building, and she’s blindfolded. I know that’s supposed to mean that justice is blind to prejudice,...
