A little about me:
I have an MFA in Writing and Literature from the Bennington Writing Seminars.
For the last couple decades, I've been a copywriter in the ad world. My New York agency experience includes Wells, Rich Green, Della Femina, Travisano and Partners, BBDO and Ogilvy & Mather. In Dallas, I have worked at t:m (formerly Temerlin McClain), Integer, Rapp Collins, WFAA-TV, imc2, Tribal DDB and TPN. I have won Clios, other ad awards and a local Emmy.
I have worked with a wide variety of blue-chip clients: American Express, Chase, First Boston, Ocean Spray, Seagram’s, Bank of America, Frito Lay, Del Monte, Gatorade, Maxwell House Coffee, JC Penney, American Airlines and Black & Decker. Just a few of many.
My stories have been published in Litro, Red Fez, Deep South Magazine and Flash Fiction Magazine. In December 2014. I made the Top 3 in the 1-Minute Monologue Contest in Clay Banks Studio in LA. In January, 2015, I produced/directed a series of videos for the DISH Network 250 Challenge in which we asked folks on the street what they’d do for $250. The concept: doing these stunts are crazy hard. Switching to DISH Network is easy – you’ll save $250 when you sign up. See the videos here.
In 2015, my screenplay, “Everything But Love” was a Quarter-Finalist in the Screencraft Comedy Competition in Los Angeles. In 2014, it was a Semi-Finalist (Comedy Category) in the Screenplay Festival in Los Angeles as well as an Official Selection in the Beverly Hills Film Festival. Lizzie Skurnick, New York Times editor of “That Should Be a Word” has featured two words I coined on her Twitter page. See one of them here.
In April, 2014, I was one of seven writers selected to perform and read my true story in Oral Fixation at the Wyly Theater in the Arts District in downtown Dallas. Oral Fixation is akin to The Moth. www.oralfixationshow.com.
I co-directed/produced a documentary film, “His Name is Bob,” (www.hisnameisbob.com) that screened in nine festivals across the U.S. The film aired on The Documentary Channel for a year, and can be streamed on Google Play, Vimeo, You Tube Movie Rentals and Snag Films. Bob was featured on the cover of The Dallas Morning News, and the film was voted by the Dallas Observer as one of the Top 10 Music Documentaries in Dallas.
In 2003, I co-wrote/directed a piece in Jill Soloway’s (“Transparent”, “Six Feet Under” and “Afternoon Delight”) underground comedy venue, Sit ‘N Spin at the HBO Workspace. Melanie Hutsell, SNL alum, and I worked together to create it and she performed the piece. Sarah Silverman was on the show that night, as was Scott Buck, executive producer of “Dexter.”
I have written five plays. In 1995, one of them received a staged reading at the Tamarind Theater in Hollywood in 1995.
In 1995, I was selected to attend a Fiction Seminar at Bennington College in Vermont. In 1993, I participated in a Writer’s Residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. I have a Honorable Mention from PEN Women for a short story.
From 1990 – 97, I was a Founding Member of Playwrights Project, a non-profit dedicated to new voices in the theater in the Southwest. Board members included Harvey Schmidt (“The Fantastiks”) and Randy Perry (Undermain Theatre).
I have a B.A. and B.F.A. from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Feel free to contact me at lisa.johnson7@gmail.com. Follow me on Twitter here.
