Shane was like a bad penny, he just kept turning back up into my life, and he wouldn't go away. For a little while after our disastrous camping trip, he did stay away. For about two weeks. And then, the phone calls, emails, and surprise visits began, yet again. Eventually, after weeks of harassment, my resistance faltered and I caved. It was simply more disruptive dealing with his attempts to get back into my life than it was to have him in my life. It wasn't like I gained any benefit from him being in it, and I knew it, and that, more than anything, was the most frustrating part of the whole thing. He didn't help around the house, didn't help with the children, didn't help with the bills, he was just there, a presence in my life that wouldn't go away.
