It has been a long time since I added a new piece to this column. So much has happened in the interim, not least the Covid pandemic. I had thought I would leave the series completed, but how can life ever be complete? It is a continuous journey of discovery, the benefits of which we pass on to future generations. Life is problem-solving; we are all agents in our destiny, bringing me to this article's subject. I have a new book, Understanding Living Systems, set to be published by Cambridge University Press in July 2023.
