“I was always passionate about youth work, child protection,

working with children. I was unlucky that the requirements

changed in child protection just as I finished my Diploma—

they now wanted a Bachelor’s degree. I was crushed—I was

a single parent, funding these courses myself and hoping to

finally get where I wanted to go. I didn’t do the courses in child

protection and youth work so that I then couldn’t get a job in

that field!”

Tess is a TAFE graduate. Having been out of the work force

for a number of years as a single mother of five children, she

returned to study when her youngest child started school. She

studied community services and completed her Certificate IV,
