in late summer, drowsy with heat
i'm walking in the grass by a cornfield
one hand outstretched
lightly dragging through the leaves
as though i'm drifting across a pond
one hand trailing in the water

as i'm walking
dark green leaves wrap around my wrist
but when i look
i see
the leaves are actually brown fingers
curling 'round my arm and gently tugging
quietly inviting me into the field
with a promise of wonders unseen
leaving all of my world behind

at the point of my decision
when i'm turning to step between the rows
a black bird appears
larger than i've ever seen
and this crow harasses
with wing and claw and caw
badgering the unseen menace
until its fingers, ...
